Review – Five Survive by Holly Jackson

Red Kenny is on a road trip for spring break with five friends: Her best friend – the older brother – his perfect girlfriend – a secret crush – a classmate – and a killer.

When their RV breaks down in the middle of nowhere with no cell service, they soon realize this is no accident. They have been trapped by someone out there in the dark, someone who clearly wants one of them dead.

With eight hours until dawn, the six friends must escape, or figure out which of them is the target. But is there a liar among them? Buried secrets will be forced to light and tensions inside the RV will reach deadly levels. Not all of them will survive the night…

Eight hours. Six friends. Five survive. A road trip turns deadly in this addictive YA thriller from the bestselling author of the worldwide phenomenon A GOOD GIRL’S GUIDE TO MURDER.

Super fast-paced for a 400 page thriller. After a few chapters when the action really started, it was impossible to put down. I felt like I HAD to know what happened next and who was hiding what.  Five Survive was such a thrilling ride.

With mystery/thriller books, it’s hard to talk about the characters without giving anything away. I know some readers thought our MC, Red, was “annoying” however, I really liked following her. She seems aloof or disconnected in a way where only losing someone close to you and struggling for years can do. However, I liked her cagey thoughts and moments of bravery.

Once secrets start to get revealed, and mysteries uncovered – it’s truly an “oh shit” moment. Each of the group of six all play a role in this one scary night and all are connecting in even more ways then you’re originally lead to believe.

Surprisingly, I was really happy with the ending and the final letter we got. There are good people who do bad things, and even though they are not always right, sometimes it’s your only choice or the choice you feel you need to make in that moment. I always am sucker for a redemption arc, especially for a good person who may have done a bad thing.  This book is absolutely worth a pick-up!
