Synopsis: I’m pushing aside the memory of my nightmare,
pushing aside thoughts of Alex,
pushing aside thoughts of Hana and my old school,
like Raven taught me to do.
The old life is dead.
But the old Lena is dead too.
I buried her.
I left her beyond a fence,
behind a wall of smoke and flame.
Thoughts: With a semi-new set of characters, and another thrilling adventure Pandemonium is a surprising yet marvelous sequel to Delirium.
Pandemonium starts off right where we left off in Delirium, but told by duel POVs from Lena. There is “then” which is Lena’s journey about a year ago after she escaped into the Wild and how different and difficult her new life is. And then there is “Now”…which happens to be a new adventure for Lena who is now under a fake name in the city of New York. Lena, unfortunately becomes captive with Julian who is a public figure for the DFA, an important movement against the Deliria. Things don’t look so good for either them, but Lena is a fighter, and she won’t lose everything she’s fought for again.
I have to admit, I didn’t think I was going to enjoy this one as much as I did. When I started reading and realized that Alex was missing, my heart kind of sunk. I love Alex so, so much. But, the more I read… the more I started to become completely lost in Lena’s new journey and all the new characters we are introduced to. This new Lena is stronger, more aware of what she needs to be. She fights for what she believes in… and she’s already lost too much, so she will not lose what means a lot to her again.
With the new characters, I was surprised how much I grew attached to them. Lets start with Raven… honestly I thought she was a huge witch with a B at first. There were a few times where I wanted to slap her for Lena, but in the end Raven redeemed herself in my eyes and I grew to like her. The other side to Raven, so to speak, is Tack. And found myself loving Tack as soon as I met him. I’m not sure why. There’s something about the dark, bad attitude, with a kind heart that just gets to you. And I’m excited to read more about him! There’s also one “twist” shall I say having to do with a character and I’m dying to see if we see her in book 3.
Then there’s Julian. He’s supposed to be this strong, sexy, public leader so to say…but honestly, he’s this handsome boy with blonde hair and blue eyes, a kind heart and completely shy to world around him. Like I said before, I love Alex and I still do. But, you can’t help but learn to love Julian too. Watching him come into this new world of Invalids and seeing how kind and lost he is just shatters you.
Lena is thrown into a whole new scene in Pandemonium but she learns to adjust. I was pleasantly surprised by how much I enjoyed the new story and characters BUT, it’s not all rainbows and butterflies and I highly missed some of the old characters. The world Lauren Oliver created is a dark one. One where the people are controlled and harmed if need be. But, I think that’s what makes me love it so much.. the broken world. And when you finally learn to love this new life for Lena, the ending is a bombshell. It completely crashes what you’ve just read. And now, I am DYING for the third book. I’m sure it will be all kinds of angst and I’m excited to read it!
